Once you know the basic backyard garden wildlife habitat elements that wildlife requires - It's Easy to Plan and Create your Backyard Wildlife Garden.

Here you will find exactly what backyard garden wildlife are searching for. Searching high... Searching low... Searching in your garden and in your neighbors garden. Bring them home... by putting in place, basic wildlife habitat elements and watch those beautiful backyard wildlife and winged-creatures come in to check things out. You'll attract a variety of backyard garden wildlife to your garden!!!

A Backyard Garden Wildlife Habitat consist of
FIVE Basic Habitat Elements

  1. FOOD
Your backyard garden needs to be full of NATIVE plants.

Plants that will produce a natural supply of berries, nuts, seeds and nectar. Why plant native plants? Native plants require less maintenance, less fertilizer, less water and are more pest-resistant which helps prevent storm-water contamination by eliminating the need to use chemicals - pesticides and fertilizers. You can also supplement the natural food source by providing feeders especially during winter months.

  2. WATER
Hey, just like you and me, wildlife need water too!

It's very important that you provide year-round, a daily source of clean water. Not only for drinking and bathing, but some species require water for breeding. NO! I’m not talking about Mosquitoes.

The most common and easy method of providing water is by placing various birdbaths in the garden. If you really want to bring your backyard garden wildlife habitat to life; build a garden water pond.
Details on "How to Build a Pond" coming soon.

Heck, I’m using my old satellite dish. Now that’s being resourceful - not to mention environmentally conscience!!

  3. SHELTER
Do you have a brush-pile in your yard? Perfect!!

Brush-piles are a perfect way to give wildlife needed protection from predators and against the elements - especially our wildbirds that do not migrate. You can provide coverage by planting densely branched bushes, shrubs and evergreens.

Don’t be so quick to cut down that “SNAG” also known as a "dead tree". What a beautiful home that gives to our woodpeckers and other cavity nesting birds.

    • That reminds me of a funny story about good friends of mine, she too, is a Backyard Birder. Well, they have this tall, thin, dead tree that is close to their deck and you can see by looking at it, that the woodpeckers throughly enjoy it. They have a perfect view of the tree out their window that you can just sit and watch the action. Well, one day her husband mentioned to her that he wanted to cut down that dead old ugly tree. His verson of what she told him is what's so funny, but I'll keep it real clean. Basically, he might has well cut off his own ...... if he cuts that dead tree down. Well, that tree is still standing.

  4. SAFE HAVEN – A PLACE TO RAISE THEIR YOUNG
    Trees, Trees, and Evergreens.
I have a 40ft Blue Spruce that is home to 100’s of birds.
It’s truly amazing the variety of birds that fly-in and fly-out, kinda like O’Hare Airport!!!!

NESTING BOXES are critical to our beautiful Bluebirds and to our magnificent Purple Martins. These boxes are made with specific hole openings tailored to the type of birds you wish to attract and they must be hung at a specific height. More details to come on that subject.
